Quote from The Garden Media Guilds press release...

"Rose guru wins Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award
Peter Beales, the rose-growing legend, has been awarded The Garden Media Guild’s highest accolade at the Annual Awards lunch held on December 3.
Peter Beales has been growing roses for most of his life. He began as a true enthusiast for old roses – on which he remains Britain’s leading authority – but in recent years he has also been breeding and introducing new cultivars.
His enthusiasm for roses has blossomed into numerous books, magazine articles and radio and TV appearances, ensuring that Peter has done more than anyone to promote old roses in the UK and further abroad."

Our Press Release

Peter Beales first fell for roses by admiring a plant in his Grandfathers garden and has worked with roses all his life from the early 1950’s, when he was lucky enough to attain an apprenticeship (one of the very first horticultural apprenticeships to be awarded) at the well known LeGrice rose nursery of North Walsham. Following that he worked under the celebrated Rosarian Graham Stuart Thomas and went on to open his own rose nursery at Swardeston. His love of the old-fashioned roses soon became apparent and the popularity of these beautiful classics can be largely attributed to him.

Maiden's Blush - the rose that started the
life-long obsession of roses.
The nursery, now based in Attleborough, which attracts thousands of visitors annually, has grown to possess one of the largest commercial collections of roses in the world and Peter himself has become well known the world over for his expertise on the subject. He has lectured in many far reaching destinations and has written several best selling books on the subject of roses.

The Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award has been won by a broad cross-section of gardening communicators with one common denominator: they had each created a body of work of the highest standard, sustained over several decades. It is the only Award which is decided by a ballot of the Guild's members and it has been the Guild's policy not to publish a shortlist or influence the voting in any way.

One other constant has been the valued support of the Award sponsor, Bayer Garden and MD, Tommy Gill who has presented the Award to a veritable galaxy of green-fingered creative superstars.
