All about AlbasThe Albas are one of the oldest races of the rose, dating as far back as the fifteenth century. They are also exquisitely beautiful with grey green leaves and pastel shaded flowers. They are healthy, highly perfumed and bloom en-masse in mid summer, growing to an average five feet high with quite dense growth. The variety ‘Alba Maxima’ with fully double flowers is believed to be the White Rose Of York adopted by Edward Duke of York, later to be Edward 1V, as a symbol to his house after he had defeated the Lancastrians at Mortimers Cross in 1461. Probably choosing the rose because the Lancastrians symbol was a red one.
