Caring For Your Roses In June

After months of hard work, June is the first month of the year that you get to sit and enjoy your roses, as they turn from hopeful buds to beautiful blooms.
Nevertheless, the work is never done with roses, so below our Rosarians explain what they are doing with their roses throughout the month of June to keep them happy and healthy.

Make Sure Your Roses Are Getting Enough Water
After the recent heat waves, the most important thing you can do for your roses in June is to make sure they are getting enough water, especially if they are in a pot. Long dry spells will cause your rose to dry out and halt its flowering period.
The best way to know if your rose is getting enough water is to test the soil with your finger.

Deadhead Your Flowers
Deadheading your roses in June after their first flush of blooms tidies up your plant and allows the rose to put its energy into new growth. The sooner you deadhead your roses once they have gone over, the sooner you will get another flush of flowers, if you have a repeat-flowering rose.

Feed Your Roses
To get your plant to produce as many flowers as possible, our Rosarians recommend giving your roses a liquid feed while they are flowering and then feed them with a slow-release fertiliser after they have flowered, to give you the best chance of a second flush of blooms.
Our Rosarian’s top picks for rose feed are Top Rose for a granular feed and Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic for a liquid feed.

Tidy up your stems
As your roses continue to shoot new growth throughout the summer, you can start tidying up your plants by tying in any new stems and removing any blind stems that aren’t needed. A blind stem is a stem that has leaves but hasn’t produced a flower bud.
Tidying up your rose in June helps train your plant the way you want it to go and allows it to put it’s energy into new growth and more flowers for the second flush.
