Hulthemia Persica is the species rose from eastern Persia, Afghanistan, and Turkestan. It is a simple five-petalled yellow rose with red smudge marks at the base of the petals, which are referred to as 'eyes'. It is a thorny rose that flowers once per year.

From this unusual rose, we had an early hybrid, 'Euphrates' from Jack Harkness. It was coral,  with red 'eyes' and only flowered once. It was also delicate in frost.

Today, we have some beautiful hybrids, usually containing reference to 'eyes' in their names. They range in colour from yellow, coral, pink to lilac with 'eyes' in red, pink and purple. All of these are repeat flowers and are hardy, with a mild fragrance.
