Lord Penzance (Shrub Rose)

Overview

The Lord Penzance shrub rose, introduced in 1894, is a vigorous and lush cultivar lovingly bred by Lord Penzance himself. This rose is a proud member of the Sweet Briars and Canina Hybrids group, celebrated for its enchanting fragrance that beckons with the fresh scent of green apples, a delightful trait inherited from its parent, Rosa eglanteria (now known as Rosa rubiginosa).

Key Features

  • Flowers: Single blooms showcasing a soft salmon hue that transitions to hints of yellow, beautifully tinted with pink, accompanied by vibrant red hips.
  • Foliage: Infused with a sweet aroma akin to green apples.
  • Growth Habit: A vigorous and dense shrub, growing to around 7 feet (2.1 meters) in height and 6 feet (1.8 meters) in width.
  • Hardiness: Tolerates poor soils and performs well in partial shade, making it a versatile choice for diverse gardening conditions.
  • Uses: Perfect for hedging, group plantings in woodland settings, and as a thorny security barrier.
  • Flowering Period: Produces beautiful blooms throughout summer, extending into a long autumn flowering season.

Cultivation Tips

The Lord Penzance rose is known for its hardiness and adaptability. It flourishes best in well-draining soil, yet it can manage in poorer soils too. Some shade won’t deter this resilient rose, making it ideal for a variety of garden placements. For optimal growth, plant it ensuring that the first inch of the branches sits just below the soil level, and dig a hole wide enough for the root ball to settle comfortably.

The Lord Penzance rose is a true testament to innovative breeding, combining the best features of multiple rose species to present a robust and fragrant shrub that continues to charm gardeners today.
