Advice
What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Mme. Grégoire Staechelin (Climbing Rose)

Description:
Elevate your garden with the exquisite Mme. Grégoire Staechelin, a climbing rose that perfectly captures the grace and aroma of traditional hybrid teas. Since its introduction in 1927, this enchanting rose has gained a reputation for its remarkable vigour, effortlessly transforming any garden wall or trellis into a stunning floral spectacle.

Key Features:

- Flowers: Delight in the large, fragrant blooms of Mme. Grégoire Staechelin. Each flower boasts pale pink petals with a deeper pink reverse, creating a beautifully veined effect. With fully double, ruffled petals, these flowers add an undeniable charm to your outdoor space.

- Fragrance: The captivating scent, reminiscent of sweet peas, fills the air and enchants the senses, making it a pleasure for any gardener or guest.

- Growth: Reaching a majestic height of approximately 15 feet (4.5 metres), this climbing rose is perfect for adorning sunny fences and walls.

- Hardiness: Adaptable and robust, Mme. Grégoire Staechelin thrives even in poorer soils and tolerates some shade, although it will yield the best results in full sun.

- Pruning and Care: For optimal growth, winter pruning and proper training are essential. Remove the 'Three D's'—damaged, diseased, and dead wood—and prune back around 30% of each third of the plant's height. Tie in new growth horizontally to promote flowering shoots from the base.

Planting and Maintenance:
For best results, plant Mme. Grégoire Staechelin in well-draining soil. If you’re purchasing from a container, it’s wise to wait until early June to plant in your garden, allowing the roots to establish. Regular watering and feeding with a granular slow-release fertiliser after flowering will support continual blooming throughout the season.

Companion Planting:
Enhance the beauty and colour of your floral display by pairing Mme. Grégoire Staechelin with Clematis. These charming companions not only complement each other visually, but they also extend the period of interest and enjoyment in your garden.

Mme. Grégoire Staechelin is a treasure for any garden aficionado, offering a splendid blend of beauty, fragrance, and resilience that promises to make a lasting impact for years to come.
