Advice
What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Mme. Hardy Roses (Shrub Rose)

Overview:
Embrace the timeless charm of the Mme. Hardy Roses, a jewel among old garden roses. Bred in 1831 by the renowned Julien-Alexandre Hardy as a loving tribute to his wife, Félicité Hardy, this exquisite Damask rose continues to capture hearts with its classic elegance and irresistible allure.

Flowers:
The Mme. Hardy Roses boast sumptuous, very double blooms in a soft white hue, each adorned with a captivating green button eye. These cup-shaped flowers are not only visually stunning but also exude a strong, sweet fragrance that fills the air with a delightful aroma. With each bloom comprising 17-25 petals, they grace your garden singularly or in charming small clusters from late spring to early summer, creating a spectacular display that lasts for several weeks. Although they do not produce a repeat flush of blooms, their initial performance will leave a lasting impression.

Growth Habit:
These vigorous shrubs reach impressive heights of 4 to 7 feet with a generous spread of 3 to 5 feet. Their sturdy, upright habit and rich green foliage make them an exceptional choice for both specimen planting and creating lush hedges. The stiff, spreading canes provide a robust structure that enhances any landscape.

Cultural Conditions:
Mme. Hardy Roses thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and bask in full sun to flourish, although they do demonstrate an admirable tolerance for poorer soils and partial shade. Highly resistant to diseases such as black spot and mildew, they are an excellent addition for gardeners seeking resilient and beautiful blooms.

Care Instructions:
Proper maintenance is pivotal for optimal growth. Light pruning is recommended in the first two years post-planting, with a more substantial cutback of about one-third following the initial bloom, as these roses flower primarily on old wood.

Unique Features:
- Fragrance: Strong, sweet scent that enchants the senses.
- Thorns: Elegant stems adorned with prickles, adding character to the plant.
- Soil Tolerance: Capable of thriving in poorer soils and tolerating some shade.

Planting Tips:
For best results, select a well-drained location for Mme. Hardy Roses. When planting in early spring, allow the roots to establish before moving them into the garden by early June.

This classic old garden rose is a must-have for passionate rose enthusiasts and vegetative gardeners alike, offering breathtaking blooms alongside vigorous growth. With its enchanting presence, the Mme. Hardy Roses will create a stunning focal point in any garden, inviting admiration and joy for years to come.

Companion Plants:
Consider pairing the Mme. Hardy Roses with fragrant Lavender or delightful Catmint for a breathtaking sensory experience. The gentle hues of Delphiniums or the vibrant pink of Geraniums would also beautifully complement these stunning roses, enhancing your garden’s visual palette.
