Advice
What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Mme. Legras de St. Germain (Shrub Rose) - The Elegant Classic

Description:
The enchanting Mme. Legras de St. Germain stands as a timeless treasure among Alba roses, celebrated for its exquisitely fragrant and sophisticated blooms. This beloved shrub rose features magnificent large, double flowers enveloped in creamy-white petals, often exhibiting delicate lemon-yellow hints. The intoxicating aroma, reminiscent of fresh citrus, is a signature characteristic that evokes the charm of traditional garden roses.

Plant Characteristics:
- Height and Spread: Grows robustly to a height of 6 to 7 feet (1.8 to 2.1 metres) with a graceful spread of up to 6 feet (1.8 metres).
- Foliage: Adorned with soft, pale grey-green leaves, this rose has downy foliage complemented by nearly thornless branches.
- Habit: With versatility, Mme. Legras de St. Germain can flourish as a shrub or be trained to climb, reaching an impressive height of up to 5 metres.

Growing Conditions:
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun but comfortably adapts to partial shade.
- Soil: Flourishes best in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist yet well-drained, showing tolerance to less ideal soil types and varying pH levels.
- Pruning: Light pruning after flowering is essential. For the first two years, prune lightly; thereafter, trim back by about a third, as this rose blooms on old wood.

Cultivation Tips:
- Propagation: Can easily be propagated by hardwood cuttings in autumn or softwood cuttings in spring or summer.
- Care: Apply a layer of well-rotted organic mulch in late winter or early spring. For optimal blooming, use a general rose or shrub fertiliser in early spring and again in early summer.

Uses in the Garden:
- Mixed Borders: Adds an elegant touch to mixed borders, creating a stunning focal point.
- Rose Hedges: Perfect for crafting fragrant and visually appealing rose hedges that delight the senses.
- Shady Areas: Its adaptability allows it to flourish in partial shade, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings.

Additional Notes:
- Parentage: The lineage of Mme. Legras de St. Germain remains somewhat mysterious.
- Historical Significance: Bred before 1848, it is a cherished example of the old garden rose tradition.

With its stunning blooms, captivating fragrance, and adaptability in growing conditions, Mme. Legras de St. Germain is an exquisite addition to any garden landscape, promising joy and beauty for rose enthusiasts, beginners, and gift-givers alike.
