Advice
What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Martha Climbing Rose

Description:
Introducing the enchanting Martha Climbing Rose, a striking climbing rose variety that fills your garden with a symphony of fragrance and beauty. Renowned for its delightful dark pink, medium-sized, double blooms adorned with a golden yellow base, Martha is a sport of the celebrated 'Zephirine Drouhin'. Its elegance is complemented by attractive greyish-green foliage and nearly thornless stems, making it a wonderful choice for gardeners seeking charm with less fuss.

Key Features:

- Height and Spread: Achieving approximately 2.7 meters (9 feet) in height and 1.8 meters (6 feet) in spread, this climbing rose is perfect for adorning trellises, arches, or garden walls.

- Flower Type: The Martha Climbing Rose produces clusters of exquisitely fragrant, double flowers that bring a splash of vibrancy to your outdoor space with their rich dark pink colour and yellow undertones.

- Growth Habit: As a Bourbon Climber, Martha showcases a remarkable repeat flowering characteristic, offering stunning blooms from mid-summer all the way into early autumn.

- Foliage and Thorns: With its lovely greyish-green leaves and almost thornless stems, Martha is particularly friendly for those who prefer a garden that’s as manageable as it is gorgeous.

- Wildlife Friendly: This wonderful rose not only beautifies your garden but also attracts beneficial insects, promoting biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

Cultivation Tips:

- Planting: For optimal development, position your Martha Climbing Rose in well-draining soil, basking in full sun to partial shade. It thrives either as a robust shrub with support or trained elegantly to climb on structures.

- Pruning: Winter is the ideal time for pruning. Remove any damaged or diseased wood, then tackle the rest by dividing the plant into thirds and pruning about 30% of each section. Secure new growth horizontally to encourage blossoms from the base.

- Fertilization: Post-flowering, use a granular slow-release fertiliser to support re-flowering and ensure the health of your plant.

Additional Information:
- Planting Time: If you purchase early in the season, it’s best to wait until early June before planting your rose in the garden, allowing time for the root system to properly establish.

The Martha Climbing Rose is not just a plant; it’s a living piece of art that enhances any garden with its alluring fragrance, repeated blossoming, and minimal maintenance due to its almost thornless nature. Embrace the charm and joy that this climbing rose brings to your outdoor spaces!
