What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Nevada (Shrub Rose)

Description:

The Nevada shrub rose is a magnificent cultivar first bred by Pedro Dot in 1927. Renowned for its breathtaking white blooms, the name 'Nevada' translates from Spanish as "snowy," perfectly encapsulating the beauty of its semi-double flowers.

Key Features:

  • Flowers: The Nevada rose showcases exquisite semi-double blooms that reach an impressive diameter of 4 to 5 inches. These flowers start as lovely ivory, gradually fading to pure white, occasionally taking on a delicate pink hue during warmer days. Their striking petals are complemented by golden-yellow stamens and release a gentle, sweet fragrance.
  • Growth Habit: This vigorous rose develops into an elegant climbing bush, with arching, spreading shoots that can soar between 7 and 13 feet tall, and can spread up to 13 feet wide. Its long, dark chocolate brown stems are notably graceful, featuring few prickles that make handling easier.
  • Leaves: The roundish, light green leaves add a fresh contrast, enhancing the overall charm of the Nevada rose.
  • Blooming Season: Blooming profusely in early summer, the Nevada rose delights gardeners with a first flourish between late May and mid-June, followed by smaller waves of blossoms throughout the season. A potential second flush in autumn may bring blooms adorned with a hint of pink.
  • Care Instructions: Hardy and resilient, this rose can withstand temperatures as low as −37 °C, thriving even in poorer soil conditions. While naturally disease-resistant, vigilance against black spot is wise. Regular removal of spent blooms promotes continuous flowering, enhancing your garden's vibrancy.
  • Uses: The versatile Nevada rose thrives in woodland gardens, alongside water features, or as a standalone statement in flower beds. It serves beautifully as a solitary shrub, in small clusters, as a hedge, or trained to climb.

Awards and Recognition:

The Nevada rose garnered the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993, although this accolade underwent re-evaluation in 2012/13.

This stunning rose is the ideal choice for any gardener seeking a resilient climbing rose, offering an abundance of beautiful, fragrant blooms that will illuminate any garden space.

Companion Plants:

For a harmonious garden setting, consider pairing the Nevada rose with plants such as:

  • Lavender - its calming fragrance and purple hues create a lovely contrast.
  • Delphinium - tall spikes of blue flowers add drama while enhancing the rose's elegance.
  • Daylilies - their vibrant blooms complement the stroke of white from the Nevada perfectly.
