Advice
What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Old Blush Climber (Climbing Rose)

Description

The Old Blush Climber is a truly captivating and historically significant climbing rose with its origins tracing back to 1789. Renowned for its delightful clusters of silvery-pink flowers, this charming variety emanates a fragrance that can range from moderately to delightfully intense, enveloping your garden in an enchanting aroma. The blooms are semi-double and loosely formed, lending a touch of old-world sophistication to any garden setting.

Characteristics

  • Type: China Climber
  • Year Introduced: 1789
  • Bloom Type: Clustered, Double
  • Color: Light Pink, Silvery Pink Roses
  • Fragrance: Very Fragrant
  • Height: Approximately 12 feet (3.6 meters)
  • Spread: About 6 feet (1.8 meters)
  • Hardiness: Tolerant of various conditions, including partial shade and less fertile soils
  • Rebloom: Repeat Flowering

Growing Tips

This climbing rose thrives beautifully on walls, though it may not be the best fit for pergolas due to its somewhat delicate growth habit. It flourishes in regions with milder winters and appreciates some shade. For best results, carry out winter pruning to remove any damaged, diseased, or dead wood. Encourage horizontal training of new growth to initiate flowering shoots from the base, promoting a fuller display of blooms.

Care and Maintenance

Regular care is essential to get the most out of your Old Blush Climber. Deadheading spent flowers and feeding with a granular slow-release fertiliser post-flowering will stimulate repeat blooms throughout summer and into early autumn.

Planting

Plant your Old Blush Climber as a bare root rose during winter months, or as a containerised rose any time of the year. If you purchase it early in the season, it's prudent to wait until early June before planting it in your garden, allowing the root system ample time to establish itself.

This timeless climbing rose is an exquisite choice for gardeners seeking to incorporate classic beauty and enchanting fragrance into their garden walls or trellises.
