What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Historical Significance

With origins tracing back before 1800, the Old Yellow Scotch rose carries a rich heritage that appeals to historians and rose lovers alike. Its historical significance adds to its allure, making it a prized choice for those fascinated by the stories our gardens can tell.

Care and Planting

  • Soil Tolerance: Thrives in various soil types, including poorer quality soils, providing versatility for different garden conditions.
  • Shade Tolerance: While it can endure some shade, planting in full sun will yield the most impressive blooms.
  • Planting: For optimal results, space shrub roses about 60cm (2ft) apart. When planting, ensure the lower inch of the branches is buried beneath the soil surface, and avoid disturbing the roots to prevent damage.
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance and straightforward, simply prune out dead canes to maintain its appearance. This variety is also less susceptible to pests and diseases.

Additional Benefits

  • Wildlife Friendly: The Old Yellow Scotch rose supports local wildlife, offering rose hips for birds to enjoy after the blooming season.
  • Security Barrier: Its thorny stems make it an effective natural deterrent, adding a layer of security when planted in groups.

This exquisite rose variety offers both beauty and practicality, making it a superb choice for gardeners wanting to infuse their landscapes with history and charm. With its hardiness and minimal maintenance needs, the Old Yellow Scotch rose is a perfect addition for anyone looking to enhance their garden.
