What is a bare root rose?

A bare root rose is a rose plant that is sold with its roots exposed rather than planted in soil in a pot. These are typically available during the rose's dormancy period (late autumn to early spring) and are often chosen for planting in gardens.

Bare root or Potted

Pompon de Paris (Climbing Rose)

Description

Pompon de Paris is a delightful and vigorous climbing rose with a compact stature, dating back to 1839. This enchanting Chinensis Climber features delicate fern-like foliage, making it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a smaller, yet resilient climbing rose.

Key Features

  • Flowers: The Pompon de Paris showcases small, button-like blooms in a profusion of vibrant bright pink. These double flowers create a captivating display through the summer months, adding a touch of charm to your garden.
  • Fragrance: With little to no fragrance, this rose is perfect for those who prefer a scent-free outdoor space.
  • Growth: Reaching approximately 12 feet (3.6 meters) in height and 6 feet (1.8 meters) in width, it is ideal for adorning walls, pergolas, or even as a lovely groundcover.
  • Thorns: The Pompon de Paris has a varied thorn count, so caution is advised when handling the plant.
  • Origin: While the exact origin of this rose remains a mystery, its popularity among gardeners has endured since its introduction in the 19th century.

Planting and Care

For optimal growth, establish the Pompon de Paris in well-draining soil and ensure it receives plenty of sunlight. When planting, bury the first inch of the branches below soil level, and be sure the hole is sufficiently spacious to accommodate the root ball without damaging the roots. If your rose is purchased early in the year, it is advisable to keep it in its pot until early June, allowing the roots to settle and establish before planting in the ground.

Companion Plants

To create a harmonious garden setting, consider pairing the Pompon de Paris with complementary plants such as:

  • Lavender for a splash of calming purple and a delightful aroma.
  • Geraniums, which add vibrant colours while enhancing the foliage backdrop.
  • Catmint (Nepeta) – this perennial will echo the rose’s soft foliage and attract beneficial pollinators.

Enhance your garden experience with the charming and resilient Pompon de Paris, perfect for any rose lover’s collection!
