Rosa Canina - Dog Rose

Description

Rosa canina, more commonly known as the Dog Rose, infuses your garden with an enchanting wild beauty. This vigorous, deciduous shrub is native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia, making it an ideal choice for those who desire a striking yet low-maintenance addition to their landscape.

Key Features

  • Height and Spread: The Dog Rose can reach an impressive height of 3-5 metres (10-16.4 feet) and spread 1.5-2.5 metres (4.9-8.2 feet), making it perfect for hedging or as a standalone focal point.
  • Stems and Thorns: This shrub displays multiple arching stems adorned with sharp, hooked prickles, aiding in its natural climbing habits while providing a protective barrier.
  • Leaves: The pinnate leaves, comprised of 5-7 leaflets, release a delightful fragrance when bruised, adding another sensory layer to your garden experience.
  • Flowers: From June to July, the Dog Rose presents sweet-scented, pale pink to white flowers, each measuring 4-6 centimetres (1.6-2.4 inches) in diameter with five delicate petals.
  • Fruits: By September to October, the flowers transform into oval, red-orange hips, each 1.5-2 centimetres (0.59-0.79 inches) in diameter, which persist on the plant for several months, serving as a source of nourishment for various wildlife.

Cultivation

  • Hardiness: The Dog Rose is fully hardy and shows resilience to maritime exposure. It thrives in a variety of soils, including heavy clay, but flourishes best in well-drained conditions.
  • Position: This adaptable shrub enjoys full sun or partial shade, fitting effortlessly into diverse garden settings.
  • Care: Minimal pruning is recommended to maintain blooming and fruiting capabilities. Light formative pruning should be sufficient, with hard pruning avoided unless absolutely necessary. The best time to prune is in late summer, after flowering has completed.

Uses in the Garden

The Dog Rose is an exceptional choice for wildlife gardens, wildflower meadows, and charming cottage or informal gardens. Its prickly stems, attractive flowers, and vibrant fruits make it a valuable asset for enticing birds and other wildlife into your garden oasis.

Special Note

While the Dog Rose fruits are edible, caution is advised due to the irritating hairs surrounding the seeds. Additionally, wear protective gloves when handling the plant to shield against its sharp thorns.

This delightful shrub rose is a wonderful addition to any garden, offering beauty, functionality, and a touch of untamed charm.
